Post #6 about out trip to Morocco!
The Saadian Tombs were one of the attractions that seemed to be on every list of things to see in Marrakech. They're located just next door to the Kasbah mosque, right around the corner from where we did some of our best shopping (coming in another post!).
I was initially a little confused about what was so special about these tombs, but it turns out they're the graves of the Saadian Dynasty (hence the name) and date from about 1600... but weren't discovered until 1917!
I'm sounding like a broken record on this point, but... the tile work was amazing!
There were three different rooms of the mausoleum, with tombs of various members of the family. Outside in the garden were tombs of servants and soldiers.
There was a long line to get up to the spot where we could gaze into the largest room, which houses the tomb of the grandson of the sultan. Not sure what he did to deserve the coolest tomb, but the cedar/stucco/Italian marble designs were pretty incredible. There was just a singular spot to take photos from and a million people waiting on their turn to stand here, so these photos definitely don't do justice to this part.
No need to spend a whole lot of time here, but if you're planning a trip, definitely put it on your list!
