Croatia, Part 4: Dubrovnik Cable Car

Well, I accidentally took a break from blogging my way through Croatia (when portrait sessions became a thing again!) but let’s get back to it. On my second day of solo sightseeing, I headed for the cable car (which I had seen from atop the Dubrovnik city walls.)

I felt a little bad checking off this tourist must-do without Alex, but the forecast was a little iffy, so I took advantage of the pretty weather since the cable car closes down in less-than-stellar conditions. (Thanks for the tip, LonelyPlanet guide!) The four-minute ride was very smooth, and it was pretty cool to see the old city from afar from the top of Mount Srd (405 meters up.)

I somehow wasn’t expecting just how much lovely nature there would be to behold! Such a contrast from being in the thick of city life!

Watching the cable car itself was pretty mesmerizing, too.

The clouds were rolling in and out all morning, so it was neat to watch the colors change on the terra cotta rooftops below.

This cross is visible from the old city, but I was still unprepared for just how BIG it is! I loved capturing it from all different angles. And of course my wedding photographer heart was imagining the amphitheater as a ceremony venue. ;)

I had absolutely no idea that there was a museum on top of this mountain, which I think is because it was too new to be in my LonelyPlanet guide. It was quite sobering to see all the artifacts from the Homeland War in the 1990s. I didn’t even realize until about halfway through that the structure of the museum is Fort Imperial, which was the first line of defense for the military during the war.

Trying to process all this heavy information definitely changed my perspective on all the pretty things I was looking at through my viewfinder outside. Such a poignant juxtaposition of war and peace, fear and hope, brokenness and beauty.

I thoroughly enjoyed my lunch at the aptly named Panorama Restaurant.

Rain clouds rolled back in just in time for me to head back down the mountain.

Back at sea level! More Dubrovnik exploration coming soon. :)
