Mary Evelyn's 8th Birthday Party

They haven’t made it to the blog in recent years, but I love photographing my own kids’ birthday parties with the “real” camera and treating them the same way as fancy events like weddings. From the milestone moments to the little details, it all matters! I was sad not to be able to do that for Afton’s 8th birthday party this year, because it happened after my 6D died and before I had my R6. First time I ever had to resort to the iPhone camera for a birthday! :(

So I had to redeem myself when a neighborhood friend’s birthday party popped up just as I was trying to master this new camera—Mary Evelyn and her guests were perfectly willing subjects, and the chaos of photographing bounce house action gave me a lot of good practice with the R6!

This brand new 8-year-old was excited to open so many fun gifts from these sweet friends! (I was a big fan of the Lisa Frank-esque banner. ;))

It was fun observing this celebration through the (50mm) lens!

It was hard to tear Afton away from the bounce house when it was time to go… such fun!

Happy Birthday, Mary Evelyn! Thanks for letting me learn a new camera body in such a fun way! ;)

There’s always more to learn, of course, but I’m feeling good about my transition to the mirrorless world, and that’s a good thing since it’s almost time for school pictures and portrait sessions. I have room for just a couple more sessions in 2023, so let me know ASAP if you are ready to get in front of the R6! :)
